Future Gadget #4, the Moad Snake, is a desktop ultrasonic humidifier built into an articulated gooseneck shaped — deliberately, lovingly — like a snake. The head aims; the coiled body is the water reservoir; the mist emerges from the mouth in slow, dramatic curls. It is the only Future Gadget in continuous daily service at the lab, where Tokyo winters and a room full of CRTs otherwise produce air with the humidity of a kiln.

🔤The name

The gadget was to be called the Mood Snake, for the ambience. The label maker had other plans. By the time anyone noticed, "Moad" was painted on the chassis, written in the lab ledger, and — decisively — funnier. A retroactive backronym was commissioned and the winning entry, ==Mist Oriented Ambience Device==, is now the official line whenever anyone asks, which they always do.1

⚙️Mechanism

An ultrasonic transducer at the base of the throat oscillates at 1.7 MHz, shattering the water surface into a cold fog of droplets a few microns across; a whisper-quiet fan walks the fog up the neck and out the mouth. The neck's segments are standard loc-line coolant hose, which holds any pose — the lab's default is "regarding the divergence meter with suspicion."

The engineering problem worth documenting is head droop: a water- carrying neck gets heavier as the reservoir feeds forward. Daru's fix routes the feed line through the neck's neutral axis and moves 80% of reservoir volume into the base coils, dropping the moment on the neck by two-thirds. FG #4 is thereby the only Future Gadget with a free-body diagram in its documentation.

The mist is cold — ultrasonic humidification adds no heat. First-time visitors who put a hand in the "snake's breath" expecting warmth invariably flinch, a reaction the lab logbook tracks under the heading "Moad bites" (current count: 34).

🗓️Service record

Runs 8+ hours daily from November through March. Credited by Daru with ending the static-shock feud of the lab's first winter, in which every doorknob was a betrayal.

Mr. Braun borrowed FG #4 for a week to test whether humidified air reduced dust attraction on his shop's tube faces. Results: inconclusive on dust, conclusive on ambience. He built his own copy rather than admit he wanted one.

One (1): a lab member repositioned the head mid-fill and irrigated the IBN 5100's bench from 60 cm. The IBN, sealed like a battleship, was unharmed. The incident report is one sentence: "The snake was aimed; the snake discharged."

Kurisu's lab-notebook review, quoted in full: "It's a humidifier. It works. The snake adds nothing." Appended below in Okabe's hand: "The snake adds everything." Appended below that, in Kurisu's, after a visible gap: "…the snake adds something."

Ultrasonic humidification is covered at Humidifier. FG #4 marks the lab's quiet maturation: after the Cannon's theater and the Helicam's ambition, gadget #4 simply works, every day, at the one job it has — a standard later gadgets are measured against and mostly fail. Its only rival for practicality is the gadget that broke causality, and that one caused measurably more trouble.

  1. The runner-up, "Massively Overengineered Aqueous Dragon," lost on the technicality that snakes are not dragons. The vote was closer than it should have been.
