Future Gadget #3, the Cyalume Saber, is a sword-shaped emergency light: a polycarbonate blade filled with the two-part chemiluminescent fluid used in glow sticks, ignited — Okabe's verb — by a twist of the hilt that ruptures the inner cartridge and mixes the reagents. For forty minutes thereafter, the bearer holds a softly teal sword that cannot cut, burn, or meaningfully illuminate, and is nonetheless the most-borrowed gadget the lab has ever produced.

🧪Chemistry

The blade's glow is standard peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence: hydrogen peroxide oxidizes a diphenyl oxalate ester, and the reaction energy excites a fluorescent dye that emits as it relaxes. No filament, no battery in the blade itself, no heat worth mentioning — the reaction runs at room temperature, which is the entire reason it can live inside a sealed plastic sword without the sword becoming a hazard.

Daru's contribution was the cartridge: a glass ampoule of peroxide suspended in the ester-dye mix, sized so a hilt-twist snaps it cleanly. Refills are hand-filled at the lab bench with fluid bought in bulk from a party supplier in Akihabara, at a unit cost Mayuri's ledger records as "cheaper than snacks, brighter than nothing."

Dye options

  • Teal (canonical)
  • Red ("Sith mode," Daru)
  • Yellow #stub — reacts too fast, burns out in 9 minutes
  • Ultraviolet — invisible, philosophically troubling, discontinued

The v2 cartridge's 15 lumens deserves context: it is brighter than any commercial glow stick and dimmer than every flashlight ever sold. In a blackout it renders a room "navigable but melancholy." At a convention it photographs beautifully. These are, the lab has concluded, the correct priorities.

Twisting the hilt slowly mixes the reagents unevenly, producing a blade that glows in drifting bands — unintended, unfixable, and by broad agreement the best thing the gadget does. Lab members call the effect worldline marbling, because of course they do.

⚔️Service history

During the building-wide power failure that also felled the CRT shop downstairs, three ignited Sabers lit the lab's stairwell for the duration. This is the gadget's only unambiguous operational success and it is cited constantly.

Convention choreography revealed the structural rating's meaning: two Sabers meeting at speed produce one Saber and one teal spill. The fluid is nontoxic and stains everything. See the May Queen's tablecloth, which still fluoresces under UV.

A Saber is ignited at every lab member induction — a tradition begun at member #004's swearing-in and maintained since, cartridge supply permitting. The handbook lists it under "obligations, non-negotiable."

An LED blade would be brighter, rechargeable, and permanent — and was vetoed by Okabe on the record: "A sword that can be switched off is a prop. A sword that dies in forty minutes is a story." The lab notebook preserves a rebuttal from Kurisu consisting of the word "battery" underlined four times, then, in different ink, "…fine, it's a story."

The underlying reaction is documented at Glow stick; the lab's cartridge design adds nothing to the chemistry and everything to the theater. FG #3 sits between the Bit Particle Cannon's pure pageantry and the Moad Snake's pure utility — the first gadget where the joke and the function are the same thing. A proposed two-handed variant, the Cyalume Claymore, exists only as a red link and a whiteboard sketch of Daru holding it.
