Kagari Shiina is a war orphan from the Beta worldline's ruined future, adopted there by an adult Mayuri Shiina and sent back to 1998 aboard the resistance's second time machine. The insertion goes wrong; the lab meets her twelve years later as an amnesiac young woman in 2010 Akihabara who remembers nothing but a fragment of melody — a lullaby Mayuri has hummed since childhood.
Between 1998 and 2010 Kagari's trail goes almost completely dark; the wiki reconstructs it from the Beta arc's worst reveals. The short version: a child with no records, no guardian, and a time machine's residue on her clothes does not stay unnoticed by the kind of institutions that watch for exactly that.1
Kagari's amnesia is not trauma alone — it is product. The SFL program under Leskinen identified her as time-machine debris and spent years conditioning her as a sleeper asset, using the Amadeus tooling in reverse: instead of instantiating a recorded mind, overwriting a live one. The lullaby is the seam where the overwrite failed. Every scene where she hums it is the real Kagari surfacing, which reframes the entire arc on rewatch and is the reason this wiki's editors consider her the Beta storyline's most quietly horrifying element. #lore
The heart of Kagari's story is anachronistic: she is the adopted daughter of a Mayuri who does not exist yet, meeting the eighteen-year-old who will become her. The 2010 Mayuri, without a word of the future explained to her, simply behaves like her mother — same warmth, same stubbornness on exactly one subject at a time — and Kagari's conditioning erodes against it. The show's thesis in miniature: identity is not storage, it is practice.
Her resemblance to Kurisu is never canonically resolved. Theories are catalogued at kagari-resemblance-theories; the wiki endorses none of them. #wip

The melody itself — four bars, minor key, resolving on an unresolved fourth — appears in the score every time conditioning and memory fight for the same body. Musicologically-minded fans have transcribed it and noted that Mayuri hums it fractionally differently in 2010 than adult Mayuri does in 2036 flashbacks: the 2036 version is the taught version, smoothed by repetition to a child. The 2010 version still has the hesitation in bar three. Kagari, devastatingly, hums the smoothed one.2
First-time viewers should not look up the lullaby's title — it is named on screen only at the arc's climax, and the name is a spoiler in four syllables.
